So why Arctium?
Our company name comes from the plant Arctium Lappa, commonly known as Burdock. The seeds of the plant were the inspiration for the invention of Velcro, a portmanteau of the French words velours (“velvet”), and crochet (“hook”). When Swiss electrical engineer George de Mestral went for a walk in the woods in 1941 he wondered if the burrs that clung to his trousers — and dog — could be turned into something useful. He patented his invention it in 1955 and subsequently refined and developed its practical manufacture until its commercial introduction in the late 1950s.
As a natural resource, the roots, seeds and leaves of Burdock have been used to “detoxify” blood, promote blood circulation to the skin surface, improving the skin quality/texture, used as a treatment for eczema, as an inhibitor of the growth of tumors such as pancreatic carcinoma and the inhibition of the growth of micro-organisms.
So as you can see – its amazing how useful our natural resources are, the inspiration they give us and the value they give to society. It’s our mission that we help our clients use natural resources in a sustainable way, help their organisations grow and make decisions that protect our natural resources for future generations.
